John Crome devoted his life to painting the countryside around his home in Norwich, England, and depicted scenery in a direct and picturesque manner. Along with Thomas Gainsborough, he was one of the first English artists to make use of etching for its own artistic possibilities rather than simply as a means of reproducing already existing designs.

Along with John Sell Cotman he founded the Norwich School in 1803. It was an English regional school consisting of both professional and amateur landscape painters inspired by the 17th century Dutch realist tradition in landscape painting.
