Ron Davis United States b. 1937 Cube III, 1971 Five color photos and laminated mylar mounted on plastic 30 x 40 in. Sweeney Art Gallery Permanent Collection Gift of Cynthia S. Monaco 97.3.1 Ronald Davis developed the foundation of his painting style in the 1960s. At the beginning he was highly influenced by the abstract expressionists. He would later transform this method into the hard-edged geometric compositions of the Minimalist era. Davis created Cube III while working at Gemini G.E.L. print and graphics studio. Cube III exhibits Davis' interest in creating optical illusions. This piece appears three-dimensional; however, in actuality, is a series of photo prints, flat-mounted on plastic and hung an inch from the wall. Optical illusions are a central theme that Davis has explored in various media from sculpture to encaustic (wax) paintings. © UC Regents and the artist.
