Stuart Davis embraced the many eclectic facets of modernism, culling influences from jazz music, popular print media, and technological inventions, as well as the European avant-garde, the cubists and post-impressionists. The belief that modern developments could invigorate painting was central to Davis' pursuit of dynamic compositions and colors. This print, made in the year of his death, illustrates Davis' optimism and the energetic color of his final years as he strove to capture the confidence of an era.
