Robert Indiana is a painter of signs. Born Robert Clark in New Castle Indiana, his early works were inspired by traffic signs, trademarks, commercial stencils and machines. He melded these influences to create the unique signs of his paintings that reference both his personal visual memories and the experience of the modern American landscape. His clean, crisp style layers letters, words, numbers and shapes in vivid colors giving the images an element of formal abstraction.
