George Ortman United States b. 1926
"The Wadsworth Antheneum: Ten Works by Ten Artists," 1964 Silkscreen 24 x 20 in. Sweeney Art Gallery Permanent Collection 64.1.1 George Ortman worked primarily as a painter in a style characterized by pure color and geometric forms. As with the other artists in this 1964 print portfolio, Ortman's style was seen as an active departure from the gestural and painterly techniques of Abstract Expressionism. Ortman often derived the geometric shapes from studies of the human figure or elements of nature. Additionally, ancient creation myths served as an important inspiration for his designs. He manipulated these forms into abstract compositions that present possible solutions to a problem. © UC Regents and the artist.
