Detail from Untitled, 1993

Luciano Perna juxtaposes found and invented images to create works that emphasize the process of artistic creation. The often junky imagery of mass culture is itself one of the everyday materials the artist puts to use in his art. Perna's work may indeed be indebted to arte povera, meaning "poor art," the late sixties and seventies Italian tradition of sculpture composed from everyday materials. This miniature (2 1/2" x 2") book is filled with a collection of seemingly random images such as the alien drawing and stuffed monkey with disco ball photograph displayed above.
