Millard Sheets United States 1907-1989 Horses in a Glade, n.d. 20 x 30 in. Lithograph Sweeney Art Gallery Permanent Collection Gift of Henry W. Coil, Jr. 96.1.22 Millard Sheets is internationally recognized as one of the top watercolorists of his era; his work is known for its intensity and clarity of tone. Born in Pomona, California, Sheets attended Chouinard School of Art in Los Angeles. He is considered a member of the so-called California School of painting of the 1930s and 1940s, two decades most known for the Great Depression and World War II. Sheets captured the local character of people, regional landscapes, and the activities of towns and cities in a narrative style, paying close attention to light and form. While the Depression gripped most of the nation, California thrived with relative prosperity. Government programs, Hollywood studios, and teaching jobs provided opportunities for artists throughout the Golden State. In 1932 Sheets became the first director of the Art Department at Scripps College in Claremont, CA and continued to teach and paint extensively throughout his life. © UC Regents and the artist.
