Frank Stella's artworks have been categorized as both postwar abstractions and abstract expressionist sculptures. These distinctions serve to illustrate the enormous range and unique path Stella has taken in his career. In Stella's early career in the 50s and 60s he developed his first signature style in a series of strict linear variations in flat colors on rectangular canvases. This print exemplifies Stella's interests during this time. Later Stella became frustrated with the limitations of his abstract variations and turned to the past for possible solutions. Heavily influenced by the Baroque period he sought to incorporate dynamic space into his works. The resulted in a series of wildly gestural three-dimensional painting-sculptures.
