June Wayne United States b. 1918 Fable Series: Tower of Babel "A", 1955 Lithograph 26 3/4 x 19 in. Sweeney Art Gallery Permanent Collection Gift of Henry W. Coil Jr. 96.1.31 June Wayne is an artist who helped make Los Angeles a world class center for the art of lithography. In 1959, Wayne founded the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles, and brought world famous artists to Los Angeles to make lithographs with master printers. Whereas in the 1950s there were no such ateliers in the United States, by the 1970s more than 200 had been established by Tamarind-trained master printers and their students. Today, the Tamarind Institute is part of the University of New Mexico. A major retrospective of Wayne's work was held in 1998 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. © UC Regents and the artist.
