Sweeney Art Gallery Permanent Collection Gift of the Norton Family 91.2.1 Lawrence Weiner is a conceptual artist who works with language. He spent his early life in New York as a member of the Beatnik generation, and began experimenting with language instead of form to transmit meaning in his art. As one of the major representatives of the Conceptual Art movement, he was inspired to take art out of the museum and produced many books, films, videos, records, posters, and theater shows. His work focuses on the relationship between people and objects, rather than on objects themselves. © UC Regents and the artist.
