Sweeney Is Moving!

February 06
Closing Reception: February 06,

Intelligent Design: Interspecies Art closes on Saturday, February 6th, with a closing reception from 6-9 PM. It will be the last exhibition in Sweeney’s current location at 3800 Main Street. In March/April, the gallery will begin the process of moving down the block into UCR’s new, three-story, Culver Center of the Arts, housed in a renovated late-19th century department store.

Once in the Culver, Sweeney’s programming will expand significantly by including more performing arts, screenings, and large-scale installations, all to be presented in its own gallery plus in the heart of the Culver: a two-story, 2000 square foot atrium. Both the Culver and Sweeney will open to the public during Gala events from October 7th to the 9th. Before that date, Sweeney will organize the senior thesis and MFA thesis exhibitions in the spring at UCR’s California Museum of Photography. Sweeney will also organize a series of preview events leading up to the October gala.

Mapping the California Desert: An Interdisciplinary Response
October 22, 2009 - May 31, 2010
"Mapping the California Desert: An Interdisciplinary Response" offers a vision of the Southern California desert from insider and outsider perspectives that evokes both cultural myths of the “desert” and explores the this region's desert in particular as an extra-urban hub where diverse communities seek refuge and flourish. During intense activity in fall 2009 and winter 2010, events will include temporary installations, guest speakers, spoken-word artists, film screenings, and desert excursions. Artists will be solicited primarily from within the ten-campus UC system through invitations and open call to faculty and grad students. Events will be presented in downtown Riverside at UCR ARTSblock and at the UC Riverside Palm Desert Graduate Center through the newly established Desert Studies program, organized by Dick Hebdige.
