Hillary Mushkin
In Hillary Mushkin's recent series, T. at Night, one finds a number of staged photographic ink-jet prints, each depicting a woman alone in various interior and exterior locales. The imagery suggests more of a surveillance camera than a photographer's lens, and can be taken nearly as a direct response to a culture which has naturalized the act of looking at women. The images read as both documents and performances, blending fact with fiction. Seemingly candid, these images are reminiscent of film noir and slasher films, and become excerpts from an elusive narrative.
In 1994, Hillary Mushkin received an MFA from the University of California at Irvine. She holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design.
Her work has been exhibited at the Long Beach Museum of Art, Long Beach, CA; POST, Los Angeles, CA; New Langton Arts, San Francisco, CA; Granary Books, New York, NY; ARC Gallery, Chicago, IL; California Crafts Museum, San Francisco, CA; Inside, Seattle, WA; Ubermain Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Watts Tower Art Center, Los Angeles, CA; Carolina Union Gallery, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; Fine Art Gallery, University of California at Irvine; Far Bazaar at the Brewery, Los Angeles, CA; and While U Wait at the Hollywood DMV, Los Angeles, CA.
