Roving Symposium
Mapping the Desert/Deserting the Map

Co-organized by UCR Sweeney Art Gallery and University of California Institute for Research in the Arts (UCIRA), and held from October 22-25 2009, the Dry Immersion Roving Symposium was a four-day, mobile, non-hierarchical gathering of sixty-six artists, educators, and researchers from seven University of California campuses (UC Los Angeles, UC Irvine, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego, UC Riverside, UC Merced). Through lectures, presentations, excursions, organized tours, and self-initiated investigations, participants immersed themselves in the geologic, cultural, and aesthetic landscapes of the upper Colorado and lower Mojave California desert systems.
