| Shana Lutker
Shana Lutker’s Slips presents an abundance of objects which center on Sigmund Freud and the interpretation of dreams. Featured on several shelving units which run the full-length of one gallery wall, Lutker surrounds the viewer with renderings of Freud’s face as well as a multitude of ink blot interpretive images that bring to mind psychoanalytic associative therapy. Also featured on the shelf are jars containing animal brains, a large book documenting an extensive journaling process, small sculptures, and newspapers. Upon initially encountering Lutker’s installation, the viewer feels privy to an intense, scholarly research project the piece is reminiscent of a library space or private academic office. After carefully examining the exhaustive collection of materials, the depth of the artist’s investigation into the unconscious becomes evident and the viewer is fascinated by the complex collection of artifacts relating to dreams, psychotherapy, and humanity’s endeavors to unearth an ever-present subconscious reality. - DH |
