Center for Tactical Magic

The Center for Tactical Magic attracted both art scholars and the curious citizens of downtown Riverside with their impressive Tactical Ice Cream Unit. Parked in the public space in front of the Sweeney on the eve of the gallery’s opening, the Tactical Ice Cream Unit was both a welcoming and intimidating space for visitors. Upon entering the large red and black truck, the viewer is immediately struck by its similarity to a military or law enforcement vehicle. The unit’s internal and external structure is reminiscent of a powerful tank. This interpretation is enhanced via a complex system of video equipment and television surveillance terminals that are prominently featured throughout the inside of the unit. Through the media devices, the viewer within the unit can observe and, in essence, intrude upon the individuals and physical space outside. While a somewhat threatening military aura is exuded by the structure and physical design of the unit, this feeling is contradicted by the unit’s function as an ice-cream unit. The long-standing American tradition of mobile ice cream vending maintains a benign and genial presence within our culture. Yet, the Center’s Tactical Ice Cream Unit disrupts and conflates traditional conceptions of authority, safety and frivolity within American culture.
