| Ben Shaffer was born in Fairfax, Virginia in 1976, he lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. He is a graduate from James Madison University and earned his MFA from Claremont Graduate University. He currently works in the Education Department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Ben’s work conveys a desire for revolutionary ideas and actions. He integrates the use of counter culture motifs, mind-altering devices, and conspiracy theories, in order to create a moment of contemplation and spark a conscious shift. He employs a range of materials and media to communicate his thought processes from building a moonshine still, to constructing strobing video kaleidoscope tunnels. He has participated in groups shows throughout the United States and abroad, most notably: LA Freewaves- How Can You Resist?, MOCA Geffen, Los Angeles, CA; Dark Side of the Sun- UCLA Wight Theme Show, Los Angeles, CA; Contraband Stowaway Loune- ISEA2004, Stockholm, Sweden; Video: 1 Min: 1800 Frames, City Without Walls, Newark, NJ; and The Prescott Billboard Project, Prescott, AZ. In 2006 Ben will be featured in a show in Claremont, California titled “The Big Picture in the Small Gallery,” which will be curated by David Pagel.
